NEC Series 2 Lamp focusing using side panel display
When changing the lamp in an NEC Series 2 projector (or pretty much any xenon based digital projector), it is important that the new lamp be properly focused in the projector. Like most xenon digital projectors, NEC provides a built-in tool to assist with the focusing of the lamp. This tool can be accessed through the Digital Cinema Communicator software (a/k/a DCC) or through the LCD panel on the side of the projector. This article addresses the LCD panel method.
The following tools are required:
#2 Phillips head screwdriver
5mm ball-driver, hex wrench or allen type wrench
It is assumed that, at this point, the new lamp has been installed, the projector closed up and ready to ignite the lamp. After insuring that the exhaust system is turned on and running properly, turn on the lamp and allow it to preheat for at least 10 minutes before attempting the next steps.
- Press the KEY LOCK switch on the projector control panel until it changes color.
- Press and hold the MENU button until the display changes to read PASSWORD.
- Using the 1-8 MACRO buttons on the projector, punch in the four digit password followed by the ENTER key. The password can be obtained from your service provider.
- Using the left/right arrow keys, use the ► key until the CONFIGURATION option appears.
- Using the ▼ key, press once so another level of options appear. It should say LAMP SETUP.
- Using the ►, repeatedly press the key to advance through the menus. The menu cycle is LAMP SETUP ► LENS CONTROL ► SETUP ►INSTALLATION. Stop at INSTALLATION.
- Press the ▼ key again to enter another level of menus. Under INSTALLATION you should now see OPTION SLOT. Use the ► to advance through the menu as follows: OPTION SLOT ► IMAGE ORIENT ► LENS CALIBRATE ► LENS CENTER ► MMS SELECT ► BAUDRATE ► DATE/TIME ► NEW BULB ► BULB WARNING ► NEW LAMP HOUSE ► BULB ALIGNMENT. Stop at BULB ALIGMENT and press ENTER.
- The LCD screen will now display a BULB ALIGNMENT screen with a Peakhold and Average value.

- Remove the small door from the bottom right corner of the lamphouse door by unscrewing the two Phillips head screws. These screws are captive screws and stay with the door after they have been fully unscrewed.

- Behind the door you will find three adjustment screws that can be adjusted using the 5mm ball or hex driver.

- Using the ball or hex driver, slowly rotate the Z axis screw clockwise. If the AVERAGE number on the LCD display goes down, stop and turn counter clockwise until you get the highest number
- Repeat this procedure for the X and Y axis adjustments. You are not targeting a particular number, only the highest number that you can get.
- It is suggested that you repeat this procedure a second or third time until you are sure that you have hit the highest possible number.
- When the highest number has been achieved, replace the access door.
- Using KEY LOCK and EXIT, repeatedly tap EXIT until you see RETURN TO USER MODE? Press ENTER.
- You may now proceed to use the projector normally.
It is suggested that you repeat this procedure after 100 hours of lamp use to obtain maximum lamp efficiency.
